Peak, valley, and intermediate regimes in the lateral van der Waals force

چکیده

We study the van der Waals (vdW) interaction between a polarizable particle and grounded conducting corrugated surface. For sinusoidal corrugations, one knows that, under action of lateral vdW force, an isotropic is always attracted to nearest corrugation peak, with such behavior called in present paper as peak regime. Here, considering anisotropic particle, making analytical calculations valid beyond proximity force approximation (PFA), we show that attraction not only toward peaks, but, for certain orientations distances from surface, attracts valley (valley regime), or even intermediate point (intermediate regime). also configurations transition regimes vanishes, presence In addition, find these new occur general, periodic nonperiodic surfaces. Moreover, demonstrate similar arise classical neutral polarized rough The description regimes, which are out reach predictions based on PFA, may be relevant better understanding particles surfaces quantum physics, experimental verifications feasible both domains.

CFD-DEM Investigation on van der Waals Force in Gas-Solid Bubbling Fluidized Beds

Effect of interparticle force on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds was investigated using the combined method of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM). The cohesive force between particles was considered to follow the van der Waals equation form. The model was validated by experimental results from literature in terms of bed voidage distribution and Eule...

Fluctuations of the Retarded Van Der Waals Force

The retarded Van der Waals force between a polarizable particle and a perfectly conducting plate is re-examined. The expression for this force given by Casimir and Polder represents a mean force, but there are large fluctuations around this mean value on short time scales which are of the same order of magnitude as the mean force itself. However, these fluctuations occur on time scales which ar...

The van der Waals interaction

The interaction between charged particles via the Coulomb interaction is one of the most important features in physics and is familiar to any student of the subject. The way in which electrons and protons bind to form the hydrogen atom is also well known and is a staple of any quantum mechanics course. However, less familiar is the interaction between such bound systems at separation R, which i...

A van der Waals force-based adhesion model for micromanipulation

The robotic manipulation of microscopic objects is disturbed directly by the adhesion between the endeffector and the objects. In the microscale, no reliable model of adhesion is available and currently the behaviour of the micro-objects cannot be predicted before experiments. This paper proposes a new model of adhesion based on the analytical resolution of the coupling between the mechanical d...

Dynamic van der Waals theory.

We present a dynamic van der Waals theory starting with entropy and energy functional with gradient contributions. The resultant hydrodynamic equations contain the stress arising from the density gradient. It provides a general scheme of two-phase hydrodynamics involving the gas-liquid transition in nonuniform temperature. Some complex hydrodynamic processes with evaporation and condensation ar...
